Update Obsidian

  1. Tap the settings icon at the bottom of the left sidebar (gear icon)
  2. Go to the General tab
  3. Tap Check for updates Keeping Obsidian updated ensures compatibility with Relay and access to the latest features and security improvements.
  • Some folks have been confused about messages to upgrade the Obsidian Installer (electron) because they can be on an old version but still have the latest obsidian version.  Wondering if you can help me workshop the CTA today, and/or maybe we should link to a docs page that explains the difference.
  • Update Electron (the poorly-named “Obsidian Installer”)
Two things:
  • Obsidian
  • Obsidian Installer
    • this is poorly named, becuase it’s not just for the finite step of installing the ‘real’ Obsidian — it’s actually used ongoingly. It’s actually like an entire browser. It’s electron.
    • should be called Obsidian Electron or just Electron

Check for Obsidian updates

  1. Open Obsidian settings by clicking the settings icon (gear icon) at the bottom of the left sidebar
  2. Navigate to the General tab
  3. Click Check for updates
  4. If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it
  5. Restart Obsidian when prompted to complete the update

Why updates matter

Staying current with Obsidian updates is important for Relay users because:
  • Plugin compatibility: New Obsidian versions may be required for latest Relay features
  • Bug fixes: Resolves issues that could affect Relay’s performance
  • Security: Keeps your notes and data secure with the latest patches
  • Performance: Improvements that make both Obsidian and Relay run better

Version compatibility

Relay is designed to work with recent versions of Obsidian. If you’re experiencing issues:
  1. Check minimum requirements: Ensure your Obsidian version meets Relay’s requirements
  2. Update both: Keep both Obsidian and Relay updated to their latest versions
  3. Test after updates: Verify that Relay functions properly after updating Obsidian

Troubleshooting update issues

If you have trouble updating Obsidian:
  1. Restart and try again: Close Obsidian completely and reopen it
  2. Check internet connection: Updates require downloading new files
  3. Manual download: Visit https://obsidian.md to download the latest version directly
  4. Check permissions: Ensure Obsidian has permission to update itself on your system
